Favela-tours are a way for tourist to discover the secrets of the poor parts in Rio de Janeiro. Brasil has a lot of so called favelas. These neighborhood are known for their violence. A favela-tour is a save way to see the poor in Brasil. These tours are fully criticized because they would encourage poverty and are nothing else than watching people like you do in a zoo. The tour-operators say that their tour is the way to feel like a local: "Don't be a gringo, be a local".

For Catholics Lourdes is an important place to visit some time in their lives. Lourdes is the place where Mary showed herself to Bernadette Soubirous in 1858. Every year thousands of people visit this small place situated at the border of the Pyrenees. To find peace, mercy, or to be at themselves for praying. The latter is difficult to find when you are around the sacred place. You have to share Mary.

Woodstock is a shelter for drug addicted elderly. In Woodstock the addicted can use in a save environment and have a peaceful life. Most of the residents had a moving life involving violence and drug abuse. This series shows 24 hours in the shelter.

Steef
Steef
Steef (62) had a normal life. He worked as a craftsman, had a girlfriend and a good place to live. Unfortunately his girlfriend died and Steef got homeless. He slept on the street and in a homeless shelter. After a long struggle he finally managed to get his own place again. This series was made over a periode of 1,5 year and shows how Steef's transition from being homeless to living under a roof took place.

During the night homeless people have two priorities: food and a place to sleep. In The Hague every night the soup-bus is driving through the city providing homeless with soup, coffee and bread. This series shows how people try to survive the cold winter night.

Despite of what some people think, there are still people living and sleeping on the street. No bedroom, no soft bed. A reason why some people think homelessness doesn't exist anymore could be that they never see the 'bedroom' of a homeless person. Here they are.

The Kessler Stichting is a shelter for homeless people in The Hague. The building they live in is 80 years old, but already in a terrible state. That's why the building will make place for a new one. This series shows the last year of the building and in which conditions the homeless have to live over there.

People living in favelas are poor, very poor. When visiting and sleeping in a favela in Salvador I started to feel like a tourist who was only interested in poverty and not able to do anything about the situation in the favela. I began to question myself. That's why I started to make photos of me. Who is this guy who wants to make a story about the favela?

Less@home is about living on the streets without walls around you and without a roof above your head. On several public places living rooms are build. Showing the contrast of having a intimate place without the privacy. This series is een cooperation between Eric Kampherbeek and visual artist Geert Limburg.
